PRP Hair Restoration vs. Hair Transplants

Hair transplant has been the most famous method to treat baldness but thanks to new technology, you don’t necessarily need to go under the knife for a thicker head of hair. PRP therapy for hair loss is an exciting new non-surgical treatment that significantly reduces hair loss for many patients.

Basically Hair transplant is a technique that involves removing the hair from other parts of scalp and transplanting them to the thinning or bald areas surgically. On the other hand PRP (platelet rich plasma) therapy involves withdrawing a patient’s own blood. Then the platelet rich plasma is extracted (via centrifuge) and injected into the scalp. The platelet rich plasma is full of growth factors that are capable of promoting hair re-growth. PRP therapy prevents the hair loss and promotes the regrowth without relying on daily drugs. This therapy has shown prominent results in patients within few weeks of treatment.

Following is the photograph from a clinical trial showing PRP therapy results after 3 months of treatment.

Side effects from both the procedures are usually minor but as the hair transplant is a surgical procedure it can be scarier for some patients. It can cause bleeding infection or swelling of the scalp and numbness on treated areas of the scalp.

Since PRP uses your own blood, you should not have a reaction to it. Studies have noted that PRP has been found to have a positive effect on male and female pattern hair loss without major adverse side effects. You may experience minimal pain, pinpoint bleeding, and redness when the injections are being delivered.

Hair transplant surgery can be a very expensive procedure. The cost will depend largely on the amount of hair you’re moving, but it generally ranges from $4,000 to $15,000. While the PRP therapy ranges from $500 to $3000 depending upon the number of PRP injections (syringes) and if stem cells are also required.

PRP therapy can be simple, cost effective and promising therapy for hair loss as it promotes hair growth and prevents hair loss. This is most effective in the earlier stage of hair loss but if you’re potentially bald, then hair transplant can be a better option.
